Field Trip March 16

Well, it's rather hard to plan around the weather but I'm think it's time we got together.

How about a boat trip on Lake Martin on March 16?  I can check with Butch and book a boat or two depending on number responding.  Boat trip is $20.

We could also take a chance on the weather and have a picnic.  Maybe we could use the Nature Conservancy tables.

Let me know if you are interested in participating in the boat trip and birding at Lake Martin.

LABA Update

Happy New Year to all.

Sorry to say that Dave and I are just too busy with the LOS winter meeting to have the January field trip and annual meeting.  Also, the rest stop is closed on I-49, one of our good stops.  I don't even know if Lea's is open.

I will be out of town on the 3rd Sunday of February.   Maybe Feb 23 to Lacassine would be an option.

We don't really have any business to discuss at the annual meeting, except whether we are going to continue to try and have field trips every month.  What about dues??? Do we want to continue to have an organization????  I need feedback from folks, so please send me your comments.

Thanks,

Judith

Fwd: Cypress Island Preserve

In a message dated 12/26/13 11:59:00 Central Standard Time, kking@tnc.org writes:

Volunteer Docents needed at the

Cypress Island Preserve!

The Nature Conservancy is looking for adventurous volunteers interested in the habitat and wildlife of south Louisiana. We greet travelers from around the world at our Visitor Center and share information about one of North America's most important waterbird rookeries . Join our team of Docents! Training is offered in January.

The Nature Conservancy is also looking  for Paddle Patrol volunteers. If you already paddle on Lake Martin or would like to paddle on Lake Martin AND you are interested in helping to protect the nationally significant waterbird rookery, please contact us to join our amazing team of volunteers. Paddlers are asked to survey the rookery boundary during the  nesting season whenever they are paddling on the lake. Our presence from the water on Lake Martin helps to ensure the ongoing success of the 13 waterbird species that call Lake Martin home.

Nature Station ribbon cutting - rescheduled

Due to Mother Nature's unpredictable tendencies, the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Nature Station's new trail system has been rescheduled for Thursday, December 5th at 4pm.

Prior to the ceremony, at 2pm we will be offering guided trail walks. As a friendly reminder, the only possible access for the event to the property of the new trails is on Shadow Bluff Rd.

For further information please refer to the event titled 'Rescheduled Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on New Trail System' on facebook or call or email.

Lafayette Nature Station North Trail System Ribbon Cutting

Please join Nature Station staff, Lafayette City-Parish President, Joey Durel, and a whole host of supporters for a ribbon cutting ceremony on the Nature Station's new trail system, Tuesday, 26 November at 10am.

Immediately following the ceremony, Nature Station staff will lead nature walks and birding walks, T.R.A.I.L. and boy scouts will lead a fast hike.  Please join us on one of these hikes while the weather is nice and the kids are out of school.

We cannot access this new trail system from our existing trail system and environmental education facility but we hope to have a bridge built one day.

For now the only way to access this new trail system where the ribbon cutting will be is off of Shadow Bluff Drive.
Directions to the event if coming from:
I-10 – take 104 exit (LA Ave.) and go south. Once past the shopping center, turn left on Shadow Bluff Drive. Cross the small bridge and park on the right.

Nature Station – turn right on Alexander Street. Turn right on LA Ave. Turn right on Shadow Bluff Drive. Cross the small bridge and park on the right.

We'll meet at the Heymann Center/old museum parking lot at 6:50 a.m. and drive to the Whiskey Bay to meet the others around 7:40.  Areas to bird:  Sherburne WMA, Whiskey Bay, and Bayou Manual Rd in the Atchafalaya NWR.  We'll return to the Butte La Rose Visitor Center facilities and then to Jim Delahoussaye's home on the Atchafalaya River.

We will be going to Lake Martin.  I don't know if the new TNC visitor center will be open by then but the small boardwalk across from the VC is open.

We plan to have lunch at Cafe Des Amis in Breaux Bridge.  We will have to have a count on how many plan to attend so that Matilde can make reservations.
